3 Marketing Mistakes to Leave Behind in 2023

By Jessica Alex

As we approach a new calendar year, it’s time to address some of the marketing elephants-in-the-room, so that 2024 is a more successful and productive year for your business!

Here are 3 marketing mistakes to leave behind in 2023:

1. Not having a strategy

Often new, small or growing businesses find themselves without a strategy at some point in time. With so many tasks and responsibilities, where do you even start with building a strategy? So instead of being stuck with trying to build a strategy, businesses try different tactics hoping that it will eventually grab people’s attention. There’s just one problem with that method:

“Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.” — Sun Tzu, The Art of War

A powerful quote, that pretty much sums up the importance of having a strategy. You can continue to do “all the things” hoping that something will eventually stick, or you can choose to be strategic in 2024 with your tactics. This includes doing the research needed, and knowing what platforms and mediums you will use to market your brand, increase your brand awareness, nurture your audience and increase your sales.

2. Not measuring your results

Execution is an important part of success, but doing things and ignoring the results is where businesses miss major opportunities. Whether its opportunities to improve and make adjustments, rinse and repeat, or finding gaps altogether.

“That which is measured improves. That which is measured and reported improves exponentially.” — Karl Pearson, Mathematician

Measuring your results is an important, yet sometimes overlooked part of marketing. When building your next strategy or campaign, include the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and metrics that you will keep track of and keep a report of your results to measure the success of your marketing efforts.

3. Only focusing on social media

Don’t overlook the power of word of mouth, networking, search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM) and content marketing tactics such as blog writing and newsletters. Social media is fantastic, it’s great, but it’s not the end-all-be-all of marketing. By focusing solely on social media, you may be missing out on major opportunities to grow your business.

It’s important to understand where your target audience is, and be there, even if it’s in-person. For example, trade shows, networking events, in-store demos are all “old school” marketing tactics that still work. It all comes down to what you’re selling and where your audience is.

Also, by utilizing other marketing tactics, it can lead more people to finding your social media page, giving it a follow, and learning more about what you offer.
